Brine supply infrastructure to be upgraded

Brine well head

Cross Country Mains replacement

Nearly 4 kilometres of underground pipe-work play a crucial role in ensuring British Salt can supply its customers with the salt products they need when they need them.

To make the UK’s broadest range of high purity salt products British Salt must have a large and reliable supply of saturated brine. This brine is supplied to the Middlewich salt manufacturing plant using large diameter, underground pipe-work from the brine field at Warmingham.

Other pipes are dedicated to the return of insoluble inorganic compounds precipitated from the brine purification processes. In this way British Salt can operate with a closed environmental loop and minimise the impact that our business has on the environment.

The current pipe-work throughout the 3.5km route is constructed primarily from cast iron and these pipes are approaching the end of their useful service. British Salt has committed to replace these steel pipes with high density polyethylene (HDPE) materials during 2010.

This significant investment will future-proof the cross country pipe-work against deterioration for the next 40 years. This is an exciting project for British Salt and is a further demonstration of its long term commitment to the salt industry and the supply of high quality salt products and services to its customers.
